Scouting Report: Ryan Boatright

Personal Bio

Full Name: Ryan Boatright
Position: PG/SG
Height: 1.80 m
Weight: 75 kg
College: Connecticut
Previous Teams: Grand Rapids Drive (2015-16), Orlandina Basket (2016)
Accolades: Illinois Co-Mr. Basketball (2011), NCAA Champion (2014)
Info: At first, he has committed to the University of West Virginia but pulled off when he learnt that they picked another player at the same position. Despite the buzz around his name after the NCAA Championship run, he chose to return for his final year so he can earn his degree in Sociology. He also captained the team as a senior. After High-School, ESPN has ranked him as the 75th best player in the nation and 14th best PG in his class.

Overview

Ryan Boatright is an explosive point guard with huge amounts of energy and very active in both ends of the floor. He is not the PG that will lead the team and place his teammates in positions to score but someone who will literally make his team run.

Offensively, Boatright has a tremendous atheltic package. He can run the floor and draw fouls due to his quickness and agressiveness. Also, he can attack the basket and finish with flair and flavour as he can even dunk the ball! He is excellent in 1v1 situations not only against other guards but also against taller or heavier players thanks to his excellent ball handling and quick dribble. At the same time, he is an excellent scorer that can be described as "microwave". Once he gets hot, it is very difficult to make him stop firing from deep.

On the contrary, he is not the ideal point guard as he may have good court vision but he will look to create more for himself than others. He wastes a lot of the time by dribbling the ball, trying to look for a 1v1 situation and stagnates his team's offensive flow. His attempts are best described as "rush" and "over the limit" as he either shoots with plenty of the time on shot clock or he will try a ridiculous and risky pass to a teammate. He can not finish consistenly through contact and still he is considered as a streaky shooter.

Defensively, Boatright had shown promise against guards of the same height and frame during his college years but this has not still shown up in the professional level. He may be an above average on ball defender as he has nose for the ball and pile up the steals but he is only limited to that. He is often seen gambling for steals in the defensive end and leaving his assignment. He often tends to focus too much on the strong side of the ball while his height and slight frame makes him vulnerable in post up situations against taller guards. Last but not least, he can not fight through screens and barely can contest shoots due to his size.

In a few words, Boatright is more of a shooting guard in a point guard body. His athetic package is overwhelming but it is questionable how he can "run" a team and his defensive potential among the pros.
